The Do’s & Don’t’s of Christmas Decorations

One of the best parts about Christmas is having the twinkling lights and the festive decorations. But tinsel can get the best of us all. If you don’t want your house resembling something from National Lampoons Christmas Vacation then follow our do’s and don’t’s of Christmas Decoration.

Don’t let Christmas lights become a safety hazard.

Always make sure that you check your Christmas lights for any loose bulbs or scraggy wires. The last thing you need when you have children running around or pets trying to nuzzle under the tree is for them to get caught up in any loose wires.

Do use oversized bulbs

You don’t have to just stick to dainty fairy lights, go for big, bold and bright and use oversized bulbs to string along your mantelpiece, bannister or windows.

Don’t forget that less is more.

It may be tempting to think that Christmas excess also relates to your decorations. But stop right there. It doesn’t. Don’t go over the top with items such as baubles. Instead, stick with simple decorations which will not only save you money but also time - and the one thing we all want when it comes to Christmas - is time.

Do remember that not all trees have to be tall and green.

We don’t all have the luxury of 7 foot ceilings and big open spaces, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a tree. There are plenty of options from small potted trees to artificial pencil trees for smaller spaces.

Don’t think that things will be perfect.

You have enough to contend with over Christmas without worrying that your decor has to be perfect. Instead of fretting about a broken bauble here or a blown set of lights there, just recognise that something somewhere will go wrong, and that’s ok. Deep breath and another glass of Eggnog should solve that.

Do embrace your vintage pieces.

If you have something from your own childhood that comes out year after year then embrace it. Christmas doesn’t all have to be matching and perfect. Those little items will make it even more special.

Don’t forget to turn your lights OFF.

Whilst it’s lovely to show your Christmas spirit as much as possible leaving your lights on all night is not so good. Not only is it bad for your electricity bill but it also poses a safety risk.

Just remember to instil the rule that the last one up the stairs at night turns the lights off.

Do bring out the classics.

Love your tinsel? Your garland? Your homemade paper chain? Then don’t shy away from the classic decorations for something a little extra special.

Don’t leave your tree up for longer than it needs to.

We don’t want to be party poopers but if your tree is normally still up to see Valentines day then you’re doing it all wrong. The first week of January is usually a good time to start removing the ornaments and packing them away for next years festivities.

Do mix and match your colours.

It’s CHRISTMAS so it’s time for colour and pizazz. Let’s face it, it’s about the only time of year we can get away with it, so we may as well make the most of it. Whilst red and green are a classic colour, throw in some other hues such as gold, pink, and blue. Take a twist on tradition by adding these colours to your ornaments and wreaths.

And most importantly don’t forget to have fun and enjoy yourself.
