How to keep your home secure over Christmas

Security for your home should always be a top priority but this becomes even more important as the festive season approaches.

When we are happy and jolly it’s usually the time when we let our guard down, and that’s when the nations thieves are poised to strike.

Here are some top tips on keeping your home secure over the Christmas holidays.

Make your house look less attractive.

Think about using lights that work on a sensor and other visual deterrents such as CCTV cameras. The last thing that burglars want be is seen.

If you’re away…

Then make sure that your house gives the illusion that you’re at home by putting your lights on

timer.

Make sure your locks are fitted properly.

Make sure that you have professionally installed, high quality locks on your doors and windows. Don’t forget any outbuildings or sheds either - especially if you have tools in them.

Keep your presents hidden away.

Expensive presents on show under the tree is a warm invitation for burglars. So make sure that you keep all your gifts out of sight.

Also think about the wrapping too, don’t leave boxes for expensive items outside your home as you’re just advertising new and expensive items that are inside.

Watch your social media activity.

Do not publicise your plans on social media, especially if you’re going away, as you never know whose watching.

Likewise with sharing pictures of gifts. If you do want to share then make sure that your privacy settings are not set to public.

Time to update your security.

When was the last time that you checked if your alarm was working? And also when you leave the house make sure that you turn it on. If you don’t have an alarm then you should consider investing in one.

Outside lights?

A common mistake that people make when they put lights outside their property is to feed the lights through a partially open window. Criminals will know to look for this so if you’re going to have outdoor lights, make sure they are solar or battery operated.

Think about your identity.

It’s always a good idea to shred any receipts or personal paperwork before disposing of it.

Of course, don’t dispose of any important items such as warranties.

Check your insurance is up to date.

Make sure that your home contents insurance is fully up to date and includes any high value items that you may have. It’s also worth checking the level of insurance that you have when it comes to accidental damage, especially if you’re planning on hosting any Christmas or New Year parties.

Don’t leave notes.

It can be frustrating when you’re expecting a delivery but you need to pop out. However, resist the temptation to leave a note for the courier saying that no one is home.

Instead, contact the parcel delivery company and give them instructions on where to leave the parcel.

Finally, look out for suspicious behaviour.

If you see someone in your neighbourhood who looks as though they are acting

suspiciously then make sure that you report it or at least warn your neighbours.

Being vigilant makes a big difference.

By following these tips you can make sure the only person sneaking in to your home over the Christmas period is Santa Claus.
